China life expectancy, 1960 to 2024

Life expectancy at birth in China, in years, from the World Bank. · updated Jul 2026

About this statistic

China life expectancy stood at 78.0 yrs in 2024, up 0.1% on the previous period.

A child born in China in 2024 could expect to live 78 years at current mortality rates, against 78 the year before. In 1960 the figure was 33.4 years.

How it is measured

The figures come from the World Bank's World Development Indicators (indicator SP.DYN.LE00.IN). Life expectancy at birth is computed from a period life table: take this year's death rates at every age, and calculate how long a newborn would live if those exact rates held for their whole life. It is a thermometer for current mortality, not a forecast; nobody born today will actually experience today's death rates for ninety years. The underlying data is national vital registration where it is complete, and survey- and model-based estimates aligned with the UN World Population Prospects elsewhere.

What the curve shows

The long rise in this curve is one of the great facts of the modern era, driven first by falling child mortality and later by gains at older ages. China gained 44.6 years over the window shown. Because the measure reacts to each year's mortality, shocks appear as sharp dips that recover quickly rather than permanent losses.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a prediction of how long people will live?
No. It summarizes current death rates in a single number. Actual lifespans of people born today will depend on medicine and conditions across the next century, and have historically exceeded the period figure.
Why can it drop sharply and then recover?
Because it is recalculated from each year's mortality. An epidemic or war raises death rates and the figure falls at once; when mortality returns to trend, so does the figure. The dip records the shock, not a lasting change in lifespans.
