The latest reading is $4.05 a gallon, for June 2026, against $4.48 a gallon in May 2026. The series is monthly (FRED series GASREGW) and runs from September 1990.

How it is measured

The US average retail price of regular gasoline, from the EIA's weekly survey of roughly a thousand filling stations, in dollars per gallon including taxes. It is the most visible price in America, posted in foot-high numbers on every corner. The data reaches us through FRED, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis's data service, and originates with the Energy Information Administration's weekly pump survey.

What the curve shows

The pump price has run between $0.92 (February 1999) and $4.93 (June 2022) over the window. It tracks crude oil with a lag measured in weeks, and its political weight far exceeds its budget share: no price shapes inflation perception more.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it lag crude oil?
Refining, distribution, and station-level pricing sit between the barrel and the pump. Crude moves pass through in weeks, famously faster on the way up than down.
How much of the price is tax?
Federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon and state taxes vary widely, so the same wholesale gasoline retails quite differently across state lines.
